Katey Schultz to Judge 2020 Wright Awards

Editors of Chicago-based non-profit literary journal Line of Advance have announced that fiction author Katey Schultz will the guest judge for the 2020 Col. Darron L. Wright Memorial Awards. Schultz is the author of the award-winning flash-fiction collection "Flashes of War," and the Afghan War novel "Still Come Home."

"As a citizen and a writer, I am looking forward to selecting this year's winning entries," says Schultz. "More than fancy sentences or past publishing history, what I'll be looking at is structural clarity or inventiveness, precision of language or imagery, and—ultimately—work that demonstrates depth of heart and a connection to humanity."

Since 2016, the Wright Awards have annually recognized excellence in prose (includes fiction, non-fiction, and hybrid forms) and poetry by U.S. military service members and veterans. Earlier this year, organizers announced additional prose and poetry categories for family members of U.S. military service members and veterans. Cash prizes of $250, $150, and $100 are available in each “service member/veteran” and “family” group, for a total of four categories.

In February, Line of Advance also announced a forthcoming print and e-book anthology will collect the winning entries from the first five years (2016-2020) of the competition. Submissions for the 2020 Darron L. Wright awards contest opens May 1, 2020 and closes May 31, 2020. Winners will be notified not later than Aug. 31, 2020. The anthology will be published in October 2020.

Administered by the Line of Advance since 2016, and underwritten by the Blake and Bailey Foundation, the Col. Darron L. Wright awards commemorate a U.S. Army leader and author who was killed in a September 2013 parachute training accident. The 45-year-old U.S. Army officer had deployed three times to Iraq, and was author of a 2012 memoir “Iraq Full Circle: From Shock and Awe to the Last Combat Patrol in Baghdad and Beyond.”
