New Milwaukee Writers Group for Veterans!

Literary organizers in Milwaukee, Wis. have announced a new writing group for military veterans there. Starting Oct. 22, 2019, the group will meet at the Woodland Pattern Book Center, 720 E. Locust Street, Milwaukee, Wis. 53212, from 6 to 8 p.m. second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. There is no charge for the series, although the regional non-profit organization accepts donations. Veterans of all ages, eras, and branches of military service are welcome.

The mission of the Woodland Pattern Book Center is the discovery, cultivation, and presentation of contemporary literature and the arts:

Our goals are to promote a lifetime practice of reading and writing, to provide a forum and resource center for writers/artists in our region, and to increase and diversify the audience for contemporary literature through innovative approaches to multi-arts programming.

Despite the coincidence of the similarly named modern camouflage pattern, the center's name is a reference to a passage in poet Paul Metcalf's "Apalache," which reads in part, "South of Lake Superior, a culture center, the Woodland Pattern, with pottery but without agriculture […]"

Facilitator for the veterans writing group is poet and writer Bob Koshin Hanson, a Vietnam War-era veteran of the U.S. Navy.

"These two-hour sessions will be a time of conversation and writing poems, songs, short stories, or that novel you always wanted to try," writes Hanson. "Even if you’ve never tried to write, come along for the fun! We’ll have plenty of mud (coffee) too."
