Chapters Sought for 'Advancing Veterans Studies'

Editors at the interdisciplinary and peer-reviewed on-line Journal of Veterans Studies have published a call for proposals toward a collection on Advancing Veterans Studies. Editors seek to include not only academic writing, but examples of course components and other supporting materials:

This collection emerges from the current moment and our shared interest in advancing veterans studies as an academic discipline. Consistent with this range of efforts, we welcome contributions that give voice not just to campus-community successes, but also to their challenges beyond academic borders. To complement chapter-length discussions of approximately 25 pages or the equivalent, we encourage course syllabi or project design case studies of approximately 8-10 pages (or equivalent), as well as interviews with veterans studies specialists working on campus and in the community to advance the field of veterans studies.

Deadline for 500-word proposals and brief author biographies is Sept. 1, 2019. Response will be communicated on or about Nov. 1, 2019.

Subsequent deadline for first-draft manuscripts will be March 24, 2020.

Deadline for revised manuscripts will be June 15, 2020.

Founded in 2016, the interdisciplinary and peer-reviewed on-line Journal of Veterans Studies is based on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University ("Virginia Tech"), Blacksburg, Va.

Mariana Grohowski is editor. As an "open access" publication, past and future content is freely accessible to the public.

Virginia Tech is also notably the site of an annual "Veterans in Society" conference.

Veterans studies comprises rhetoric, literature, history, social and behavior sciences, student affairs, and other disciplines. In a mission statement, the editors write:

The goals of the journal are to sustain international research in veterans studies, facilitate interdisciplinary research collaborations, and narrow gaps between cultures, institutions, experiences, knowledge, and understanding.

We understand veterans studies as a multi-faceted, scholarly investigation of military veterans and their families. Topics within that investigation could include but are not limited to, combat exposure, reintegration challenges, and the complex systems and institutions (VA) that shape the veteran experience. Veterans studies, by its very nature, may analyze experiences closely tied to military studies, but the emphasis of veterans studies is the “veteran experience,” i.e., what happens after the service member departs the armed forces.

Outside of the call for submissions to the collection, the journal publishes on-line continuously throughout the year. Articles are published as they are ready. According to submissions guidelines:

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. There is no embargo on the journal’s publications. The dates each manuscript was submitted and accepted on are published on the PDF version.

Authors of articles published remain the copyright holders and grant third parties the right to use, reproduce, and share the article according to the Creative Commons license agreement.
